What is Mental Health? Mental health can be described as a state of well-being in which the individual releases her abilities and can cope with the normal stresses of life. There can be several other examples and definitions, but this is the simplest and most comprehensive one. There can be many reasons for a person to become mentally unstable, and even minor incidents can make the mental health of a person take a beating.

When it comes to big issues like the current COVID-19 pandemic that has engulfed the whole world for almost a year and a half, the consequences can be severe. There are chances that even doctors and psychiatrists cannot fully know about the effect on the health of people due to this pandemic.

Because the current pandemic is on such a level that is unprecedented in our lifetimes, the true extent will only be known after some time has passed. Until this becomes clear, the consequences of the pandemic on mental health can be devastating.

Children and young adults are the most vulnerable demographic around the world, since they’re usually more active and mobile — especially in several countries in Asia and South America — and easily get tired of staying confined to their homes. Due to all the restrictions being applied to them, home starts to look more like a jail than anything else. The mental health of this age group is only going to deflate in the coming months.

What their parents and guardians need to do is to console them and guide them towards coping with this pandemic. Because this is not something we have ever experienced on such a large scale, even parents and guardians can’t fully grasp what’s going on and how exactly they should cope with the situation.

Below are some examples and scenarios as to how mental health can be not only extremely important for the concerned person, but also for everyone around them. Most of us must have faced many situations that can lead to mental health problems. This will be defined in detail in the next section, so read on.

Reasons for Mental Illness

The reasons for mental illness can be due to several aspects. The following ones are the most prevalent around the world:

  • Childhood neglect
  • Abuse
  • Failure in studies or in any aspect
  • Inferiority complex
  • Fear of meeting with people
  • Low confidence, etc.

Traumatic experiences, especially in one’s childhood, can lead to mental health problems later in life — especially in stressful times. This can only be felt by the concerned person and a doctor/psychiatrist/counsellor will need to guide her towards mental health.

Other aspects like fear of meeting with people and experiencing failure can be very depressing for any person.

Mental health is like a treasure, and only those who don’t have it know its true worth.

Why is Mental Health not Taken Seriously?

The effects of mental health and its symptoms are not always outwardly prominent, and can easily be mistaken for shyness. Only after some time when the symptoms are prominent people start taking notice, but even after acknowledging that there’s a problem, there are several cases in which it is not taken seriously at all.

People usually feel embarrassed to talk about mental health issues, even with a doctor. When it comes to their friends or anyone in their social circle, this is a taboo topic — people like to hide their perceived shortcomings under the carpet rather than discussing it in order to solve the problem.

Ill mental health affects the lives of hundreds and thousands of people around the world. Governments also spend a lot of money in funding this area of research to ensure there are doctors and medical staff who can offer their support for the affected people.

What Happens When a Person Can’t Achieve Full Mental Health?

This aspect can be associated with people who are not successful in their life. But, there can be other factors where a person who is seemingly fit and successful in anything she might still be struggling with their mental health.

This can be a dangerous symptom not only for themselves, but everyone around them, since they could react to stressful situations with aggression or sudden emotional outbursts.

What Can Be Done to Make your Mental Health Well?

First of all, you need to be mindful and positive in your approach to everything you deal with. Mental health needs to be taken care of very seriously, as it doesn’t only affect you but everyone you interact with.

Try not to overthink about any topic or situation, as this will aggravate the negative thoughts in your mind. See the lighter side of life and assume that every problem in your life can be resolved.

In some cases, it can be difficult for a person to maintain their mental health. It’s a reality that in many regions worldwide, especially the so-called “third world” countries, mental health care is just not a thing. People remain trapped in grave scenarios for several decades.

Steps Toward Mental Well-Being

Mental well-being is such an important subject and should be dealt with care and sensitivity not only by loved ones and colleagues, but also by governments and health agencies worldwide.

Mental health is all about living a healthy life rather than a “perfect life” depicted in books and movies. Life is not a movie, and the situations vary greatly from fiction. Every person needs to take care of their own well-being and deal with the situations head-on positively. Mental health for everyone should be a priority regardless of age, race, and other demographics.

Final Word

The state, health authorities and places of work of any country are responsible for maintaining the mental health of their citizens/workers. What is your experience of maintaining your mental health?
